Dear Montreal and Philadelphia,

We would like to thank you for your recent success in the NHL Playoffs. Enjoy your late round draft picks.

Sincerely,

Half of the NHL

Teams and fans alike, should be thanking the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers for their recent success in the 2010 Playoffs. As everyone knows, the Habs had one of the best underdog runs that I have seen in my life time, knocking off both Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby in two seven game series. The Flyers success might be even more impressive, with the way they’ve dealt with injuries to their comeback against the Bruins when down 3-0.

Why is the success of two of the most hated teams in League be important to any of us?

Canes vs Bruins TONIGHT!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on January 12, 2010 by davepoleck

This should be a good one tonight. The last place Carolina Hurricanes face off against the playoff bound Boston Bruins, with the loser going one step closer to that coveted first overall pick. Wait a minute….it’s not the Bruins playing tonight? Ohhhhh it is just their first round pick on the line?? WHAT!? It is their second round pick on the line as well!?!?! So basically, you are telling me that you are a Leafs fan, your playoff hopes are dwindling, your “superstar” forward that you traded the world for has 1 goal in his last 12 games, and you can’t even find solace in the fact that you can cheer for a pick in the lottery draft with the potential of getting a Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin! You can’t even cheer for a 30-35th overall pick in what is considered a weaker draft year. You are telling me that all you have to cheer for is, AT BEST a 3rd round pick!!!

1st Round Draft History

One of my biggest hockey pet peeves is when people say how good teams are at drafting, when they are really just good at sucking for a long time. The Pittsburgh Penguins did not win the Stanley Cup because they were good at drafting. They won because they were really bad for half a decade: Fleury (1st in ’03), Malkin (2nd in ’04), Crosby (1st in ’05), Staal (2nd in ’06).

A major transition is occurring in the NHL, one in which the teams of the 00’s are going to fall into mediocrity, and the basement dwellers of the post lockout era are going to climb the charts. The teams that have been racking up the high first round picks are starting to get good. Pittsburgh and Washington are the forefathers of this movement, with Chicago, and to a lesser degree, Columbus, breaking onto their level last season. Now, it looks like LA, Phoenix, Atlanta and Edmonton are ready to take the next step.

So I did some research on the 1st round draft picks in the NHL right now. Down below is a list of each team, and the first round picks that are on their team at this point in time. Some of the interesting things to note are: Continue reading
