By the Numbers

Check out this article at NHL.com that takes a look at some numbers to remember from this past hockey season.

The most surprising one has to be

“#8 — Consecutive shootout goals by Los Angeles forward Jarret Stoll, including the deciding goal in L.A.’s playoff-clinching 3-2 win against Phoenix on Thursday. In all, Stoll is 9-for-10 in shootouts; his shooting percentage (90.0) would be the highest of any player with five or more shots since the shootout was introduced in 2005.”

A close second is how the hell can two players take 14 shots in a game and fail to score.

2010-11 Stanley Cup Pick

Posted in Hockey Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 14, 2010 by davepoleck

Didn’t do too bad by picking the Flyers to win last year. Although it wasn’t the way I expected them to get there (that’s right, I didn’t predict them to make the Playoffs on the last day, upset NJ and then come back from an 0-3 series deficit from Boston), they still ended up two wins away from Lord Stanley.

Are you ready for my prediction this year……. Continue reading

Leafs’ Projected Lines

Posted in Hockey Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , , , on September 13, 2010 by davepoleck

The time is coming for my predictions; and I need to make a lot of them. By the end of October, they will mean absolutely nothing because there will be injuries, demotions, promotions and slumps; but they’re still fun.

One of the hardest teams to predict this year is going to be the Leafs. I don’t mean in the grand scheme of the season because even in the weaker East, I think they will fall short. But in terms of who will play an important throughout the season is anyone’s guess. They have one scoring line that is pretty much set in stone, but after that there are about six or seven guys who could fit into the top six and see their points rise because of it.

Training camp might not even decide much because while youngsters like D’Amigo and Irwin will be given a shot to play, there are others in the system that will be put ahead of them in terms of NHL playing time. Continue reading

Babcock on Wings’ Lines

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , on June 28, 2010 by davepoleck

I will get to a weekend/Draft recap at some point today…but right now the most important thing is that Mike Babcock talked about the lines for the 2010-11 season. And in talking about that he mentions that he will be starting Datsyuk and Zetterberg on a line together in order to get them going right away. Here is what he briefly suggested:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Bertuzzi-Filppula-Franzen
Cleary-Abdelkader-Hudler
Draper-Helm-Eaves/Miller

Here is a list of the NHL Home Opening games that were announced earlier today. Highlights for me are Detroit @ Chicago, Calgary @ Edmonton (Hall debut?), Philly @ Pittsburgh (Consol Energy Centre), Montreal @ Toronto and LA @ Vancouver. Of course Detroit plays a double header to start the season.

The NHL is wasting no time in closing the books on last season and getting things started for the 2010-11 season. Suffice it say that there will be no problem finding enough things to write about over the next few weeks:

Tuesday June 22: 2010-11 season schedule is released

Tuesday June 22: 2010 Hall of Fame inductees are announced

Wednesday June 23: NHL Awards

Friday June 25: NHL Draft

Friday July 1: Free Agency Begins

Can’t wait.
