Seguin vs Kessel

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , , , , on October 28, 2010 by davepoleck

Tonight is round 1 of what most likely will be a career long comparison between Phil Kessel and Tyler Seguin. Is it fair to do? Not a chance! It doesn’t even make sense because there is still another first round pick in the picture for the Boston Bruins. But it is definitely fun to look at because there is little chance that the Leafs can come out on top of this deal.

I Love the Offseason

Here are the headlines on a very, very busy day for me at work…and in the NHL

– Matt Cooke re-signed with the Penguins

– The NHL’s Brett Favre, Scott Niedermayer, is set to announce his retirement today

– Plekanec is on the verge of signing a long term deal with the Habs. Not sure if I like him long term, especially for the money he will likely get after a breakout year.

– Pat Quinn has stepped down as Oilers’ coach and will be replaced by Tom Renney. Quinn will stay on in an advisory role.

– Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell to Boston for Dennis Wideman and the 15th overall pick. You can thank the Leafs for this one. No way they would move their top pick if they didn’t have #2 overall.

– I thought the Hall of Fame inductees were going to be out at noon?

Thomas Saves the Day

Tim Thomas was absolutely clutch tonight. On paper he only made 24 saves, but many of them were either point blank or on a breakaway. Not to mention the saves in the shootout. Rask is now DTD with an injury, so I hope Timmy wins back the job.

Luca Caputi didn’t look out of place tonight either, and he pretty manhandled his way to setting up the Leafs tying goal. Regardless, it was another shootout loss for Toronto and another hammer in the coffin that has them sitting 29th in the league, and was against the team that will benefit most from that position.

Well that was shut down quickly. Kypreos just said that the Bruins would be unwilling to part with the 1st round draft pick given to them by Toronto if they were to try to acquire Kovalchuk. That kind of render the 20 minutes I spent writing that last article kind of pointless.

Canes vs Bruins TONIGHT!!

This should be a good one tonight. The last place Carolina Hurricanes face off against the playoff bound Boston Bruins, with the loser going one step closer to that coveted first overall pick. Wait a minute….it’s not the Bruins playing tonight? Ohhhhh it is just their first round pick on the line?? WHAT!? It is their second round pick on the line as well!?!?!┬áSo basically, you are telling me that you are a Leafs fan, your playoff hopes are dwindling, your “superstar” forward that you traded the world for has 1 goal in his last 12 games, and you can’t even find solace in the fact that you can cheer for a pick in the lottery draft with the potential of getting a Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin! You can’t even cheer for a 30-35th overall pick in what is considered a weaker draft year. You are telling me that all you have to cheer for is, AT BEST a 3rd round pick!!!
