Thursday’s Scenarios

Posted in Hockey Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2011 by davepoleck

With a rare quiet Thursday night in the NHL, here is a look at what things could look like come Friday morning in the playoff races.

– A Montreal win combined with a Rangers’ loss confirms that Montreal will either finish 6th or 7th in the Conference.

– A Rangers’ win means that they could still finish anywhere between 6th and 8th, but since Carolina has the tiebreaker with them, could still finish out of the playoffs.

– A Dallas overtime loss would clinch a playoff spot for Nashville and Phoenix.

– A Dallas regulation loss would clinch a playoff spot for the two above, as well as Anaheim and Chicago, because although Dallas would still only be four points back with two games remaining, they would not be able to catch their 45 and 43 wins. Thankfully, they play the Avs.

First NHL goal for Ryan Stoa tonight. The Avs already have Chris Stewart, but count Ryan Stoa in as a future power forward for this team; 6′ 3″, 215lb…and he has skill. He has been brought up to the big team six different times this year! I would expect him to stick around this time if Peter Mueller’s headache doesn’t stop.

So the weekend saw two semi big trades involving JS Giguere and Dion Phaneuf; Monday night saw another semi big trade because it involved Olli Jokinen; and now today there are multiple rumours of more bodies being on the move. Michael Ryder is on the block in Boston, Brendan Witt has been waived on the Island, and Ethan Moreau’s name has popped up as another potential exile from Edmonton.

The big story out today is that Don Waddell met with Ilya Kovalchuk to tell him to expect a trade within the coming days. Sources say that five teams are in the mix: Chicago, Boston, LA, New York and an unknown team. My guess is Colorado. With that said, here are the deals that I think would have to be put together for Ilya to go to any of these teams: Continue reading
