NHL goalies, get used Tomas Holmstrom’s ass for two more years. What a deal, what a steal. Tomas Holmstrom has or is in the process of becoming a Detroit Red Wing for life. Rumours are that he signed a two year deal with a cap hit of $1.875 million!

While Homer is always an injury risk, since the lockout he has scored 29, 30, 20, 14 and 25 goals. In the lower goal seasons he played 59 and 53 games. But everyone knows that what he brings to the table is so much more than what’s on the stat sheet. His net presence on the player powerplay is possibly the best in the history of the NHL. Of his 25 goals, 13 were on the powerplay. Of the 13 other people who scored 25 goals last season, those 13 powerplay goals for Homer were the most. And he only made $2.25 million last year.

Holmstrom has obviously lost some foot speed and is pretty much only useful in one end, but now at $1.875, his dollar value is absolutely huge. In that 25 goal group last year are guys like Kesler ($5 million next year), Toews ($6.3 mil), Sharp ($3.9 mil) and Fisher ($4.2 mil).

The most important thing that this does is to give the Wings even more flexibility in signing their remainings free agents and possibly dipping into the pool for a depth defenseman. Have a look: Continue reading

Leafs aren’t waiting any time this offseason (or taking the spotlight away from the playoffs); they signed the Monster to a two year extension today. They have Giguere under contract for one more year at $7 million, which is the same as Kipper and more than guys like Fleury, Thomas, Brodeur, Miller and Bryzgalov. I’m guessing they will look for the two to split duty next year, and then have Gustavsson take over full time in 2011-12.
