Hawks Can Decide Their Own Fate

Posted in 2011 NHL Playoffs with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 10, 2011 by davepoleck

By the time Dallas takes the ice tomorrow night, they’ll know whether or not they have a chance at making the playoffs in the West. That is because the Hawks play Detroit just after noon and a single point earned by them will clinch them a playoff spot. If Chicago loses in regulation to the Wings, Dallas is in a must win situation against the Wild.

Since we know the four Eastern playoff matchups, here is what could happen in the West depending on these two teams tomorrow.

If Chicago wins:
LA @ Van
Phx @ SJ
Nas @ Det
Chi @ Ana

If Chicago loses in OT:

If Chicago loses and Dallas wins:

Thursday’s Scenarios

Posted in Hockey Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2011 by davepoleck

With a rare quiet Thursday night in the NHL, here is a look at what things could look like come Friday morning in the playoff races.

– A Montreal win combined with a Rangers’ loss confirms that Montreal will either finish 6th or 7th in the Conference.

– A Rangers’ win means that they could still finish anywhere between 6th and 8th, but since Carolina has the tiebreaker with them, could still finish out of the playoffs.

– A Dallas overtime loss would clinch a playoff spot for Nashville and Phoenix.

– A Dallas regulation loss would clinch a playoff spot for the two above, as well as Anaheim and Chicago, because although Dallas would still only be four points back with two games remaining, they would not be able to catch their 45 and 43 wins. Thankfully, they play the Avs.

Ozzie Jinx

I have stayed away from this topic, considering way back on November 23, 2009, I wrote this much thought out blog on how close Chris Osgood was to 400 career wins, and how by the end of his career, he would be among the greats of all time.

Well since that date, Ozzie has won a pathetic………..two games. The latest coming this past Saturday against the Blackhawks. His last win before that was on December 12, 2009 against Nashville!! Talk about a jinx.

But fear no more Chris Osgood, I see a bright future for you. Jimmy Howard struggled last night against Colorado, which has caused Babcock to go right back to old faithful tomorrow in Dallas. Ozzie currently sits at 397 career wins.

Western Conference Predictions

This will probably be a lot quicker than the East predictions because there is a lot to get to before the season kicks off Thursday at noon. Still don’t know why there needs to be three full days without hockey before things get underway, but oh well:

First Doc Ock, Now Chuck Norris

Kari Lehtonen has decided to don Mr. Chuck Norris on his mask for the 2010-11 NHL season. Pretty interesting choice for a guy who has only played more than 50 games once in his career since being drafted 2nd overall in 2002. Regardless of Norris’ reputation as superhuman, this mask still doesn’t beat Howard’s new one:

Modano Done in Dallas

The Dallas Stars have officially let Mike Modano know that they will not be offering him a contract for the 2010-11 season. Wasn’t this confirmed back in April when they played a goodbye montage for him during his last game in Dallas….

3 Awesome Videos

Again, PuckDaddy has the exact same three on his 3 stars of the night at: http://bit.ly/cwp7EP ….but I still feel like they’re good enough to be posted here too.

Eric Staal’s hat trick, which of course came on hat night in Carolina.

A very emotional goodbye to Mike Modano, a lifetime Star, who might have played his last game in Dallas last night. He is the highest scoring American born player in NHL history…sorry Brett Hull from Belleville. Modano had a goal, an assist annnnnnnnnd the shootout winner.

Crosby’s 50th goal and 500th point….which actually turned out to be his 55th assist and 500th point…they gave the goal to Bill Guerin a few hours later. Kinda funny right?
