Awful OT Winners

Awful play by Marian Gaborik poking this puck by the best goalie in the league. Believe me….he had the situation under control.

Neal just turns and fires; Roloson wasn’t even ready for this one. Pittsburgh is winning games exactly the same way they were after Crosby went down, boring, shutdown hockey. Please come back, Tampa Bay.

I love two things about this video. A) that it has already been posted on YouTube. B) It was definitely posted by a Wings’ fan because it is titled “Cleary scores an amazing goal of the pad of Bryzgalov”. Planned, yes. Amazing…c’mon.

Getting Closer…

Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary are targeting a Thursday return after both missing almost a month. They are part of the laundry list of guys who are slowly getting healthy for the Wings. Valetteri Filppula finally returned on Boxing Day after being out since late October. They are still waiting for Ericsson, Williams, Kronwall and Franzen. They also have solid defenseman Andreas Lilja on the long term injured reserve with prevailing concussion symptoms.

It has been a rough year for the Wings so far; but I definitely find it encouraging that even with all of the key injuries, they still sit in 9th place in the West, with a game in hand of most teams ahead of them.¬†Odds would say that the return of 4-7 key players will improve a team’s play and record. So with that said, I am pretty sure they will be continuing their consecutive playoff appearances streak alive.

What might be more interesting is what happens to the lines with all the returning players. They have been relying on players who were put into roles that were not expected of them at the beginning of the season; Justin Abdelkader, Derek Meech, Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves have all been put in to big game situations when they expected to either sit in the press box or play in Grand Rapids. Even Kris Draper has chipped in with timely scoring.

Another big development has been the exceptional play of Todd Bertuzzi and his chemistry with Pavel Datsyuk. Franzen, who was slated to play with Pavel at the beginning of the season, won’t be back until after the Olympics, so I think Bertuzzi will still get his time to shine. Once he returns, it could once again leave the Wings with three solid scoring lines:

The return of these players is always going to be a huge boost to struggling Pavel Datsyuk. He has been overwhelmed by the top D of other times over the past month, because after him, the Wings haven’t had much scoring. But this guy is definitely still one of the best players in the League. Last night he had Niedermayer draped all over him the entire game until on the goal that he started. He entered the Ducks’ zone, taking three players with him and dished to Homer, who gave it back to Pavel at the top of the circle. Four Ducks’ players all went straight towards him; he slid it through their feet to the point, shot, rebound, goal. It is those types of plays that I am used to seeing from Pavel Datsyuk. They are going to start happening more and more in the coming weeks.
