Devils Win Lottery

Posted in New Jersey Devils, NHL Draft with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 12, 2011 by davepoleck

For the first time since 2007, a team other than the last place team has won the Draft Lottery. In doing so, New Jersey and their 3.6% chance of winning move from 8th and 4th and will likely be looking at Sean Couturier as their new number one centre of the future.

It’s funny how things work out. New Jersey, a team that has been one of the most successful franchises over the past two decades, had the #1 pick all but locked up until a midseason resurgence that saw them push their way out of the basement and in contention for a playoff spot. With the pick of a ball they erase half of that late season push and have an excellent shot at an elite player. On the flip side, the Sens are a team that has been in turmoil for the past three seasons. Their addition of Craig Anderson at the deadline vaulted them out of the league’s basement. Now that late run has cost Ottawa their 5th overall pick in the draft.

The new top 8 of the Draft looks like this:

  1. Edmonton Oilers
  2. Colorado Avalanche
  3. Florida Panthers
  4. New Jersey Devils
  5. New York Islanders
  6. Ottawa Senators
  7. Atlanta Thrashers
  8. Columbus Blue Jackets

Western Conference Predictions

This will probably be a lot quicker than the East predictions because there is a lot to get to before the season kicks off Thursday at noon. Still don’t know why there needs to be three full days without hockey before things get underway, but oh well:

Magnus Paajarvi(-Svensson)

Posted in Hockey Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , on September 24, 2010 by davepoleck

Magnus Paajarvi (it seems he has dropped the Svensson from his jersey) put on a pretty good show for the TSN audience last night, netting a hat trick and adding one assists on Cogliano’s powerplay goal. The clip is of the first goal he scored and show how skilled and dynamic he can be. Remember, unlike Hall and Eberle, Paajarvi has been playing against men in the SEL for the past three season, since the age of 16.

Coming into camp, he was considered third on the depth chart in terms of who would make the team behind those two other rookies. Even before this little burst of energy last night I would have kept all three around. The Oilers don’t have much going for them this year so why not let all three show their stuff with the big club. Even if he is sent down after camp, it’s only a matter of time before Ales Hemsky goes out with an injury.

TSN had a cute article yesterday on the success that Jordan Eberle (“CANADIAN HERO” says Pierre) and Magnus Paarjarvi-Svensson are having at the World Championships this year. Eberle has four points in the three games he has played while MPS is leading Team Sweden with eight points in six games. Both are property of the Edmonton Oilers and should find their way onto the main club next year. Continue reading

Picking It Up Late

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 7, 2010 by davepoleck

Things are dim in Edmonton; they lost their top forward, defenseman and goalie for long stretches during the season, and the locked up 30th in the league a few weeks ago. But in the past few weeks, two of the players they are stuck with long term have been showing their worth; both coming from opposite ends during the season.

After an absolute torrid start (38 GP; 19 goals, 20 assists), Dustin Penner went down the hole that saw him end up in MacT’s doghouse the past two seasons. Over the next 30 games, he only had 5 goals and 5 assists. With the season completely in the dumps for good, Penner has begun to make things happen again with his size; with 7 goals and 5 assists in his last 14 games (including so far tonight).

While Penner was on par with Crosby for the first half of the season, Tom Gilbert was more in line with Hal Gill. After 2008, Gilbert was locked up long term for a lot of money. Over his first 65 games with the struggling Oilers, he only had 2 goals and 10 assists. In his last 15 games however (including so far tonight), he has 2 goals and 13 assists!!
