Confusing Schedule

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , , , , on May 25, 2010 by davepoleck

I must say that I am shocked Game 1 of the Finals isn’t going to be Saturday afternoon in front a NBC audience that doesn’t care, but I am even more shocked at how much this Finals differs from last year.

This season, the two Conference Finals series ended on Sunday May 23 and Monday May 24; the Finals begins Saturday May 29, with Game 2 on Monday May 31. Last season, the Wings knocked out the Hawks on Wednesday May 27, but started the Finals just three days later on Saturday. Then they played Game 2 less than 24 hours later on Sunday. While Detroit won both of the opening games, the common consensus is that they just ran out of gas over the next five games of the series.

Could this be because Gary Bettman doesn’t have his poster boy in the series?

Trade Malkin?

Are you kidding me? Sure the Penguins lost in Round 2, but trading the reigning Art Ross AND Conn Smythe winner!?!?!

The thought actually makes sense for the Pittsburgh Penguins. John Grigg of The Hockey News agrees in his latest article. He even suggests what would be an absolute blockbuster of a trade:

Worst…Play..Ever

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 13, 2010 by davepoleck

What will be criticized as possibly the worst defensive play in NHL history. The only thing I can think of is that Gonchar thought that Moen was going to dump and chase and the puck was going to be sent into his corner. But that theory is shot down when you see Moen was a few feet before the red line before he let go of  the puck.

There were still 15 minutes left in the 2nd period at the time of the goal; at 3-0, all Pittsburgh needed was one goal to get themselves back in the game. Talk about a backbreaker. Or seasonbreaker.

The Trip…

This play was frustrating to watch. PK Subban was clearly tripped at the blue line, which allowed Talbot to break in and tie the game. You can actually see Fedotenko grab his leg on the replay.

It was even more frustrating when the Pens tied it like two minutes later.

It’s even more frustrating knowing that if Pittsburgh makes their third straight Finals, the Crosby Show will be out in full force more than it ever has, but every one will fail to mention that they faced three teams who wouldn’t have been in the playoffs had the been in the West. Parity?
