The Old Wings are back!!

And no, I don’t mean the dominating ones who will outscore any team in the League. I mean the ones who constantly allow two goals against in a short period of time. Two nights ago against Washington, it cost them the game; tonight was different story as they were up 3-1 when it happened and were able to win in a shootout. But I will get to that later. This was a constant issue with the team last season and especially during their 2008 Stanley Cup run (Nashville series).

The only thing that I can point to is it possibly being an overconfident effort once they grab a lead. The other night was kind of bad luck; one goal had Brad Stuart absolutely dangled by Backstrom, and he rarely gets dangled, the other goal was a bouncing puck that landed in the slot on Bradley’s stick. I can’t say what tonight’s issue was because I did not catch all of the game. All I can say now is that it is an issue. Now for the good…

They won a game in a shootout, against Niklas Backstrom nonetheless! More good news is that they went to extra rounds and actually won. Their previous shootout losses to Dallas and Chicago on the weekend were both over three shooters. This one went eight rounds, with unusual shooters like Leino, Eaves, and Drew Miller, who eventually scored the winner. It was actually Josh Harding starting the game, but he left during the first period when Ville Leino drove the net hard. Here is a shocking stat for you, Todd Bertuzzi played more than both Datsyuk and Zetterberg with 23:16 logged. That not only shows have much of an improvement he has made this season in his work ethic, but also that Mike Babcock trusts him defensively, something that had always been a downside to his game.

In his 13th start in 14 games, Howard was pretty damn impressive with 27 saves including EIGHT in overtime and an additional six in the shootout. The Wings’ next game is a huge one; Saturday in Detroit against the team that just won’t get out of eighth, the LA Kings.
