Cool Story of the Week

Posted in Vancouver Canucks with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2011 by davepoleck

Thanks to the guys at DobberHockey for this one. In the Canucks 2-0 loss to Edmonton on Tuesday night, the boxscore states that Cory Schneider was put in net for 0:29 seconds of the game. This wasn’t because of an injury or equipment malfunction for Luongo, but it was an effort by the Canucks to get Schneider to his 25th game of the regular season. Those 0:29 seconds gives him 24 on the year, meaning if he starts one of the Canucks final games, he will hit the quarter century mark.

The significance of this is that playing 25 games makes him (and Luongo) eligible to win the William Jennings Trophy for lowest combined GAA. It is even more significant because in 2008-09, Schneider won the AHL version of the Jennings (Holmes) and the Vezina (Bastien) for best goalie. Mike Dunham is the only other goalie to win both the Jennings and Holmes award in their career.

NHL Awards Predictions

I’m fed up with the NHL right now so I’m not wasting time with explanations that I have already given. They’re not on until tomorrow night, but here we go…one last time:

Conn Smythe Cap Hit

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 11, 2010 by davepoleck

It was bad enough that Jonathan Toews even won the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP when he only had three assists in the Stanley Cup Final (stepping back a bit he only had two even strength goals all postseason!!); now a report has come out saying that because he won the award, he receives a $1.3 million bonus that will count against Chicago’s cap next season.

This is the same Chicago team who was already paying out $57.5 million to only 14 players in the 2010-11 season. Andrew Ladd will be gone regardless, but if they can’t find a way to either bury or buyout Huet, then it probably also means the end of two of Patrick Sharp, Dustin Byfuglien or Kris Versteeg.

No Superstitions for Flyers

This gives me the feeling that the Flyers feel like they have nothing to lose. They also know that they are the clear underdogs in this series, so why not play around with something as stupid as not touching the Campbell or Wales Trophy. Chris Pronger said on the Fan yesterday that he told Richards to “do whatever he wants” when he accepts the Trophy, they both know that something like touching a trophy is not going to affect whether they win the Cup.

Vezina Trophy Predictions

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , , , , , on April 19, 2010 by davepoleck

The NHL award nominees start to get announced today, with the first being the Vezina Trophy. Here is who I think will be nominated, with the winner in bold:

  • Ilya Bryzgalov
  • Ryan Miller
  • Martin Brodeur

Miller is my Hart Trophy pick, so how can I not pick him for the best goalie. Him and Bryzgalov are definite nominees, with the third spot being somewhat up in the air. Brodeur has the most shutouts and wins in the League, so that is what will get him in in my mind, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone like Kipper, Vokoun or Howard sneak in.

Rask and Halak had fantastic seasons, but both only started 45 games which I just don’t think is enough for consideration.

Update: I was right…check out when the others will be announced Continue reading
