Capital Gain

Rumour has it that RFA Nicklas Backstrom has re-signed with the Washinton Capitals for 10 years, somewhere between $60-70 million. Backstrom is would be one of the top centres in the League no matter what, but playing with Ovechkin obviously doesn’t hurt. He came into the League as a set up centreman, but over his first three seasons his goal totals were 14, 22 and 33 this past year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him be a consistent 35+ goal man as he enters his prime.

I doubt the Caps re-sign Theodore, but they need a new deal for Michal Neuvirth this year, and Varlamov next. Unless they shop Semin, signing Backstrom to this deal means Brendan Morrison won’t be back and probably one of Tomas Fleischmann or Eric Fehr, both are RFAs. Scott Walker and Eric Belanger could stick around if they want to take a pay cut, but that doesn’t seem to happen anywhere but Detroit.

Game 7: Montreal vs Washington

Well, I struck gold once again with my reverse prediction psychology last night by picking the Coyotes over the Red Wings, but thankfully I won’t be using those magical skills in tonight’s prediction: Continue reading

P.K. Subban Called Up

The second best name in hockey will be playing for the Montreal Canadiens tonight in Game 6. P.K. Subban has been called up from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs and should be dressing in tonight’s game against Washington. In the six game series victory for Hamilton over Manitoba, Subban has three and six assists, leading the team in scoring.

The Bulldogs are going to be opening their second round series on Thursday against either Abbotsford or Rochester. I suspect they are praying for a Motnreal loss so they can get their stud back.

+.500%

With the 2009-10 version of the Washington Capitals 54th win of the season tonight, they pushed Caps’ franchise record beyond the .500 mark for the first time in team history! Their franchise record is now: 1215-1214. They were doomed from the beginning, starting their first season with a streak of 1-15-2, and finished the season 6-87 in 1974-75.

Varlamov In Net Tonight

Posted in Hockey Thoughts with tags , , on February 11, 2010 by davepoleck

Semyon Varlamov is finally going to be back in the Capitals net tonight when they face the Ottawa Senators. It was assumed that he would be starting Saturday against the Blues, but this change of plans has to indicate the direction that the Caps are moving after the break. Even after Jose Theodore played pretty damn good during the second and third period yesterday, they are still going with Varlamov today.

Varlamov Recalled

After only one game in Hershey, Semyon Varlamov has been recalled by the streaking Capitals. The rookie was absolutely awesome in the few months of the season going 12-1-2 and a .924%. His last game was a 3-0 shutout over the Lightning December 7.

This will hopefully put to rest the carousel that has been the Washington net this season. The Russian was able to take the majority of starts away from Jose Theodore early on in the season, but has been plagued with injuries. Now, the Caps are on a 14 game winning streak. Michal Neuvirth will likely be sent back down to Hershey and bide his time until next season. The Caps have back to back games Wednesday and Thursday, so I would expect Varlamov to start one of them.

Although management will say all the right things to keep Jose Theodore’s confidence up, just like they did at the beginning of the season, Varlamov is the one they want in net. It will only take one slip up from Theo for him to lose his job for the reason of the season, as long as Varly can stay healthy.
